Carla Ward

Carla Ward is a football coach and former midfielder who is the head coach of the Republic of Ireland women’s national team. She has previously managed in the Women’s Super League (WSL) with Birmingham City and Aston Villa, and in the WSL 2 with Sheffield United.

As a player, Ward spent her career in English football, including captaining Sheffield FC and scoring over 100 goals. She moved into management with Sheffield United, before taking charge of Birmingham City in 2020, where she navigated a challenging period while keeping the side competitive. In 2021, she became Aston Villa head coach and led the team to their highest-ever WSL finish, helping establish them as a more consistent top-half side.

She was appointed Ireland head coach in 2025, taking charge ahead of UEFA Nations League campaigns and major tournament qualification cycles.

Off the pitch, Ward is also a public speaker and is regularly involved in leadership and performance discussions within football.
