Jason Roberts MBE is a former Premier League and international striker, renowned for both his achievements on the pitch and his influential work off it.
Born in London and of Grenadian heritage, Jason began his football journey at Hayes FC, following in the footsteps of his legendary uncle, Cyrille Regis. His professional career took flight with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1997/98 season. He then impressed during spells at Torquay United, Bristol Rovers, and West Bromwich Albion, where he became a club-record signing at £2 million.
Jason went on to enjoy successful stints with Wigan Athletic, Blackburn Rovers, and Reading, establishing himself as a powerful and intelligent forward. After a distinguished playing career, he officially retired from professional football in 2014.
Alongside his playing career, Jason became a respected voice in football media. Since 2011, he has been a regular contributor to BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606, as well as Match of the Day 2, Football Focus, and Final Score. He has also appeared on Sky Sports, BT Sport, BBC World Service, and Premier League TV, and previously hosted a weekly Premier League programme for Flow Sports in the Caribbean.
In 2007, he founded the Jason Roberts Foundation, a charity committed to providing educational and sporting opportunities for young people in the UK and Grenada. His passion for youth empowerment and community development remains central to his legacy.
In 2010, Jason was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours for his services to sport and community work in both Grenada and the UK. He later explored documentary work, most notably with Jason Roberts Meets Fabrice Muamba (BBC, 2012), in which he secured the first in-depth interview following Muamba’s on-pitch cardiac arrest.
Jason also co-founded the clothing brand Chess London, blending fashion and football culture, and in 2016, launched the popular radio show The Dugout with co-host Damien on The Soul Of Grenada Radio 100.7 FM.
In November 2017, he was appointed Director of Development at CONCACAF, where he plays a pivotal role in shaping the region’s football development strategy, focusing on grassroots, coaching, and education initiatives. His work has helped enhance the infrastructure and accessibility of the game across North and Central America and the Caribbean.
In 2022, Jason was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his exceptional contributions to football, youth development, and social impact.
