Johnathan Joseph BEM (DJ Spoony)
Johnathan Joseph BEM, better known as DJ Spoony, is a DJ, broadcaster and television personality whose influence on UK garage has spanned more than four decades. His career began on the influential pirate radio station London Underground in the mid-nineties, where he first helped champion the emerging garage sound. He later joined Kiss 100 as part of The Dreem Teem, alongside Mikee B and Timmi Magic, and the trio quickly became one of the most important forces in UK garage. Their rise took them from Kiss to Galaxy FM and ultimately to BBC Radio 1, where they won a Sony Radio Award and brought the once-underground genre firmly into the national spotlight.
Equally passionate about football, Spoony presented BBC 5Live’s 606 and Radio 1’s Weekend Breakfast, interviewing icons like Sir Alex Ferguson, José Mourinho, and David Beckham. Since 2014, he’s presented for Premier League Productions, and in 2021 joined Amazon Prime Video’s football team as a pitch-side reporter and pundit.
Today, Spoony continues to be a prominent voice in UK Broadcasting. He hosts his own show, The Good Grove weekday evenings on Radio 2, where his love of soul, dance and classic grooves reaches a nationwide audience. During his career Spoony has won many awards including MOBO DJ of the year (2001), he was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to charity through music during the COVID-19 pandemic in the 2023 New Year Honours, and in 2025 he won the Boisdale Music Awards DJ of the year.
Spoony’s personality and charisma also made him a natural fit for television. He has appeared on numerous mainstream shows, including Never Mind the Buzzcocks, The Weakest Link, MasterChef, Test the Nation and Sky Sports’ Soccer AM. He also competed in Strictly Come Dancing, showcasing his trademark humour and charm to millions and won Celebrity Mastermind on his specialist subject Ray Charles.
