Born in Greenwich, Lyle started his professional career with Millwall in 2007 before spells with Concord Rangers, AFC Bournemouth, Falkirk, Sheffield United Swindon, and Scunthorpe United. He has also spent time on loan at Eastbourne Borough, Croydon Athletic, Lewes, Hereford United, Woking, and two loan spells at Partick Thistle.

In July 2015, 25-year-old Lyle signed with AFC Wimbledon where he played for three seasons between 2015 and 2018 and became their record Football League goalscorer with 44 goals, and the highest scorer during their Football League era with 55 goals in all competitions.

Lyle then signed for Charlton Athletic in June 2018 on a two-year deal, before moving to Nottingham Forest in August 2020. In January 2022, Lyle joined Birmingham City FC from Nottingham Forest for the remainder of the Sky Bet Championship season, a move that saw him reunite with his previous Head Coach at Charlton, Lee Bowyer.

Lyle is eligible to represent the Caribbean nation through his grandparents, and in March 2015 he received his first Montserrat national team call up to play in their qualification ties for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He made his full international debut against Curaçao and scored his first international goal in the same game. In June 2021, Lyle became the new all-time goalscorer for Monserrat after scoring two late goals against Grenada in their 2022 World Cup preliminary fixture.

Away from football, Lyle has dyed his hair pink every October since 2018 to raise money for Cancer Research UK and can be regularly found watching Formula 1!
